Personally, I wish I had been around for one of these events! Is it sad that I am 21 years old, yet am lusting after a 17 year old who plays a werewolf? I guess that plays up to Twilight's strengths and incredible PR strategies. When the books first came out, I refused- REFUSED to read them. As an avid Harry Potter fan I felt that this was blasphemy for me to enjoy both sets of magical adolescents. However, due to a recent bet with my roommate, I read the entire Twilight saga within a week. My motivation for finishing so quickly? Well I wanted to see New Moon of course! The incredible PR tactics that the new movie used were really captivating- even to a person who was trying my strongest to resist get bit by the Twilight bug. (Get my humor?)

But, I agree with you, that this meet and greet at the malls was a VERY effective PR event. When I was younger, and groups like Backstreet Boys were at the mall, I would BEG my mom to take me, so I could meet and hang out with them. Little did I know that they would never remember me. But hey, I still have a picture of my 8 year old self and Nick Carter. When celebrities market themselves (which is their product), as normal and friendly, it not only creates public PR for themselves, but also for the project (in this case New Moon).

I agree with Carolina (and the post in general). It was a great gesture for an apology but part of a good PR plan is to plan every aspect and for every situation and, apparently, Papa Johns did not. Hopefully, they will learn next time.

Where was I when this deal was available? Haha, although, by the sound of it I wouldn't have wanted to be at the store with all the crazy masses. It definately was a great "idea" but not a great tactic. I don't think they put a lot of planning into this. It sounds like they came up with it last minute in their rush to apologize, and they ended up the worse for it.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard all day (albeit's only 9:40)! Technology is an amazing thing. I spent my summer in China, and the fact that I could email, Skype, call, and send and receive text messages from my friends in Hawaii made the world smaller than ever. With all these technological advances, I wholeheartedly agree with your point that people prefer face-to-face communication over the medium of technology. While it was great seeing my friends over Skype, nothing beat the big hug I received after seeing them in person.

Hi Kristina! I am in your online PR class and wanted to leave a comment. I almost wrote about Starbucks for the CSR blog as well. As much as I love their coffee, I also like that Starbucks is a conscientious company and practices good corporate social responsibility. They understand the expectations of their customers and the community and work hard to accommodate for their business. Starbucks has so many partnerships with green organizations and global efforts and I too will feel a little better knowing that my money for coffee will go a lot further than the Starbucks register.

I agree with you that Subway's monopoly game is a great example of good public relations. By interacting with their publics, Subway draws people into their restaurants and gives them something fun to play while making them feel like winners all at the same time. I know that I personally love to win a free cookie or a bag of chips, not even because I really want a cookie but because it's simply fun to win something. Because prizes are simple, you are likely to win and makes Subway's publics happy.

I also came across this situation when researching crisis communications. Airlines in general have a difficult time dealing with customers and United did a poor job. I think your post discusses the incident well and I agree with your assessment of the impact of social media. Indeed, without it, this incident may never have become that detrimental to the company's reputation.
